THE PROVINCE OF ANDIJAN 

(general information)

The Province of Andijan is situated in the eastern part of Fergana Valley. It covers an area of 4,200 square kilometers. The climate is typically continental (Asian) with extreme differences between winter and summer temperatures. The population of the Province is 1,899 000, and the average density is 499 people per square kilometer. Historicaly the area is situated on the Great Silk Road route made famous by the adventures of Marco Polo. As the independence of the region grows and the emergence of this Central Asian area redevelopes the Great Road is making a comeback.

The Province is divided into 14 administrative districts. The Provinces administrative center is the city of Andijan with 303,000 inhabitants. Andijan is the 3rd largest city in the Uzbekistan.
Other major centers in the Province are Asaka, Shakhrikhan, Khanabad, and Karasu.

The region is rich in natural resources. Multiple deposits of oil, ozokerite and lime represent the mineral resources of the Province. Agricultural products include: cotton, wheat, melons and a wide variety of fruits and vegatables. The area is easily farmed as the climate is favorable to a mixture of farmed crops.

There are presently 89 joint ventures registered in the province. UZ-Daewoo Auto represents the largest venture and was established in 1992. Other ventures are: Turkish, American, Korean, Russian, UK, German and investments from the Czech Republic.Total foreign trade turnover totaled US $ 388,7 million in 2001. Investment grows in large part due to the abundance of natural resources and a large well-trained, highly educated managebale work-force.

The area continues to be a bright spot in the region and forges ahead with plans of expansion, and increasingly becomes an inviting area for all dimensions of foreign interest.

THE POPULATION

Approximately 2,221,800 people live in the Andijan region, which is 9% of the population of Republic of Uzbekistan. The rural population makes up 69.9 % of the population (1,553,900) and the remaining 30.1 % of the population is urban (667,900). A total of 102 nationalities are represented, of which most 88.7% are Uzbek. The remaining are Kyrghyz at 3.8%, Russians at 2%, Tatars are at 1.3% and Tadjik at 1%. The remaining 3.3% are other ethnicities. The population grows by 33.2 thousand people per year on average. The Andijan region is the most densely populated region of Uzbekistan (517 per sq.km.).

THE HISTORY OF ANDIJON

· Circa 500 thousand BC - The beginning of civilization; including primitive communal system development.
· Circa 100 thousand-40 thousand BC - Evidence of sites with instruments used in the production and processing of silicon
· 2000 BC - The beginning of pastoral - agricultural tribes.
· 800 - 700 BC - Development of agriculture, cattle breeding, metallurgy of bronze and copper, and the beginning of decorative ceramics.
· 700 - 600 BC - Transition from bronze to iron; development of industrial forces; growth of agriculture on the basis of irrigation.
· 600 BC - Submission of a number of southern areas of Central Asia to Ahmenid's troops. Ferghana and Andijan remain independent.
· 400 - 100 BC Occurrence of the state of Davan; development of agriculture and animal industries.
· 200 BC - The development of a new trade route, the great Silk Road, through territories of the Ferghana valley, including the modern Andijan area.
· 104-99 BC - Khanate troops attack Davan, resulting in temporary occupation; later followed by restoration of independence.
· 220-419 AD - Development of the Marhamat period of culture of Davan with its capital in Ershi (modern Marhamat district of the Andijan region); development of urbanization; wide circulation of potter's art.
· 500 AD - Became a part of the Eftalit state.
· 650 AD - Turkic-speaking nomadic tribes migrate into Central Asia, resulting in the turkization of the local population.
· 715-812 AD - Campaign of the Arab commander Qutaiba ibn Abbas and the islamization of the local population.
· 900 AD - The establishment of the Samanids with their capital in Bukhara; development of science and art and trade with other countries. Andijan has become one of largest cities of the Ferghana valley.
· 1000 AD - The establishment of the state Karakhanid; further development of cities, economy and culture.
· 1200 AD. - The establishment of a regional state of Ghengis Khan's empire whose governor was Ghengis' son, Khan Djigatay.
· 1400 AD- Disintegration of the Mongolian state and the rise of the state of Tamer lane. The young ruler Babur in 1504 made a campaign in Afghanistan and in 1526 made this country a base for the dynasty of the Great Mogul's empire.
· 1500 AD - Rise of the Sheibanid state.
· 1700-1876 AD - Isolation of the Kokand Khanate
· 1876 AD - Colonization of the Ferghana valley by Imperial Russia.
· 1898 AD - Revolt against Imperial Russian by the chapter Madali Ishan (Dukchi Ishan). After suppression of the revolt, about 800 men are arrested, of which 415 were prosecuted, and the leaders of revolt were executed.
· 1914 - The July gathering of farmers in Andijan who opposed being drafted into the Russian military because they didn't want to leave their poor families behind.
· 1916 - Revolt against the Imperial Decree of June 25 " concerning mobilization for the Russia-German military conflict ".
· 1917 - Establishment of Soviet authority.
· 1917-1923 - Armed resistance to the Soviets. The Basmañhi movement led by Ergash kurbashi, Khalhodja kurbashi, Mueddin kurbashi, Kupshermft kurbashi, Madaminbek kurbashi, etc.) and severe suppression by Red Army.
· 1921-1922 - Land-water reforms introduced; (The Soviet authorities take land from the rich landowners and distribute it to landless peasants.)
· 1927-1928 - Second stage of land-water reforms and creation of the preconditions for mass collectivization.
· - 1935 -1938 - The "Repression" of the local populace resulting in the elimination of the intelligence, calling them "enemies of the people" and "spies" for other countries.
· 1941-1945 - Mobilization of the Soviet Army for World War II; the relocation of much of the Soviet industrial base from the front to Central Asia.
· 1941 - Administrative formation of the Andijan region.
· 1991 - Disintegration of the Soviet Union and the declaration of the independent Republic of Uzbekistan.
· 1991 Establishment of the first joint venture with participation of the foreign capital.
· 1996 - (May) manufacture of the first Uzbek automobile at
''UzDaewoo Auto'' Factory.

Andijan State University EDUCATION



In the Andijan region there are 742 primary and secondary schools, 650 preschools, 5 Institutes for higher education Andijan state university, Andijan state languages and pedagogic institute, Andijan Engineering and Economic Institue, Andijan agriculture institute, Andijan Medical institute, 30 trade schools, 9 academic prep schools and 58 professional colleges.

ANDIJAN AGROCULTURE INSTITUTE


Is created 1964 as branch of the Tashkent institute of the engineering and irrigation and mechanization of an agriculture.In March, 1992 under the decree of the President of Republic of Uzbekistan is renamed as Andijan institute of agriculture. In the institute 2100 students study from them 1200 full time students, 900 - part time part timr students. There 170 teachers teaches, 8 of which the doctors of sciences, professor, 88 candidates of sciences work. The institute prepares the experts in 10 specialities: vocational training, economy (on branches), book keeping and audit, agriengenaring, melioretion and water facilities, creation of farms and their technical service, agronomics, protection of plants, manufacture, primary processing and engineering of a storage of agricultural products, zootecknics. At institute existing a study-scientific facilities in 250 hectares, where students will carry out their practical employment and experiences.

ANDIJAN MEDICAL INSTITUTE


Is created in 1955. Study 2402 students of 30 nationalities. There 465 teachers, 52 of which the doctors of sciences, professor, 177 - candidates of sciences work. The institute prepares the experts in 4 specialities: vocational training (medical pedagogics), medical business, pediatrition, nurses of high category. Each year graduate 440-450 young experts - doctors.
The institute cooperates with the New York academy of sciences of USA, with college Imperial of England, with university of Oxford, with fund America - Austria of Austria, with the Russian medical academy, with the St.-Petersburg medical academy, with the Volgograd and Novosibirsk medical universities, with the Kiev medical academy and many by others prestigious educational and centers of science of the various countries.
By the scientific employees of institute in the last 5 years are prepared 13 monographer, 20 textbooks, 208 -methodical manuals and 205 rationalization offers. Besides the number of the candidates of sciences has increased to 53 people this years, number of the doctors of sciences to 16 doctors.
The large achievement of scientific institute is the creation of a preparation "Gemalin", which is accepted against Anemia and it is possible to use as Immunistimulator too.

SPORTS


The fact that the female hockey team on a grass "Andijanka" repeatedly became the champion of the USSR and became the owner of European cup, brightly shows that serious attention is given to the sports in the Andijan region. In the region are 26 stadiums, 62 sports schools for children and youth in function, 62 shady courts and 4,2 thousand other sports structures serve to the population of the region. Stadium "Navruz" and " Friendship of the peoples ", the sports complex "Yambol" are the proud of the Andijan region which is an adequate to the worlds standards. Constructed new tennis court "Andijon" is one of best not only in Uzbekistan but in all Central Asia too.
From the graduates of sport schools Andijan Svetlana Ulmasova became the champion of the Europe and winner of the world cup, Feliks Pak became the champion of the Europe on boxing. Mels An became the champion of the Europe on Sambo Wrestling, Muhammadkodir Abdullaev became the champion of the world on boxing, U'tkirbek Haydarov three times champion of Uzbekistan and owner of a gold medal in a world championship on boxing and others.

TOURISM


The Andijan region attracts people from different continents with the beautiful nature, hospitality,with the rich national traditions and historical sights. Among them an old architectural complex "Jami" (Mosque and Madrasa)", Bobur's house-museum, grave yard of the Arabian commander Kutayba bin Muslim in Jalakuduk area, Architecheral monument "Akhmadbekhoji".
The city Honobod is very attractive city - park wich received the name " Switzerland of Uzbekistan " among the people of the Fergana valley, where admirable avenues of rare breeds of trees of Europe and Asia, flower gardens, greatness and beauty 
The national park Bobur which located in the 300 hectares of the area has became a vacation spot not only for the Andijan people but also for many inhabitants of other areas of the Fergana valley. The museum " Bobur and world culture " is located in there too, where assembled the rare literature on the history of the literature of the peoples of Central Asia and Boburs dynasty. 
In the center of Andijan city there is an open ethnographic museum " Hunarmandlar rastasi " (line of the handicraftsmen in the Bazzar), where work the patrimonial handicraftsmen, who continue ancient tradition of the ancestors.
There is a unique museum in Fargona valley of irrigation of the Large Fargona channel in the village Kuyganyort.
Created by the Andizhan foremen " Arch of Andijan " "Hotira va qadrkash hiyoboni " (Avenue of memory and honor), central avenue Bobur, and other many modern architectural structures with the large interest are visited(attended) by the numerous tourists from the different countries. 
Involves(attracts) the tourists and visitings of the modern enterprises as флагман of motor industry in Central Asia " UzDEU Auto ", "Antex" etc.
The city - park Hanabad, national park and museum "Bobur and world culture", open ethnographic museum " Hunarmandlar rastasi" (line of the handicraftsmen in the Bazaar) etc. Also attracts tourists visiting of the modern enterprises of Automobile industry in Central Asia "UzDEU Auto", reservoir Hanabad. During the period of 2001 Andijan region has accepted 22., 5 thousand tourists also is rendered of services for the sum 70,1 Million soum.
In the region some tourist companies are in function, largest one is Joint-Stock company " Andijanturist".
